Debunking the Controversy: The Truth Behind Indian PM Modi’s South African Visit
PM Modi South African Visit The spokesperson for the Deputy President of South Africa, Vukani Mde, has strongly refuted a recent article in the South African newspaper Daily Maverick regarding the visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Mde dismissed the report as entirely “fabricated” and vehemently denied its claims that PM Modi had been snubbed upon his arrival, referring to the newspaper’s narrative as a “mystery” due to its apparent lack of factual basis.
In an exclusive interview with WION, Mde refuted every aspect of Daily Maverick’s account, emphasizing that “none of it was true.”
The Daily Maverick story alleged that PM Modi had refused to disembark from his aircraft at Waterkloof Air Force Base, supposedly due to the South African government’s decision to send only a cabinet minister for his official welcome. Mde, in contrast, provided a detailed account of the planned welcome for PM Modi, demonstrating that there had been no snub.
In an official statement, the Deputy President’s spokesperson presented a precise timeline of PM Modi’s arrival, dispelling any notion of a snub. Mde clarified that Deputy President Paul Shipokosa Mashatile had been well-informed of PM Modi’s visit well in advance and had arrived at Waterkloof before the Indian Prime Minister’s aircraft had even landed. He also revealed that PM Modi’s plane had communicated its imminent landing 30 minutes prior, allowing Deputy President Mashatile ample time to be in position.
Mde also addressed the allegation that Deputy President Mashatile’s visit to Waterkloof had been a last-minute attempt to appease PM Modi’s dissatisfaction. He firmly denied this claim, asserting that Mashatile’s schedule had been carefully managed to accommodate the reception of PM Modi without any last-minute changes, dispelling the notion that his presence was meant to “appease” anyone.
Mde’s condemnation of the Daily Maverick’s report was unequivocal. He expressed bewilderment at the newspaper’s motives for “propagating such fabrications” and lamented their attempt to “mislead” the public, condemning their actions in the “strongest possible terms.”
The disputed Daily Maverick article had alleged that President Cyril Ramaphosa had dispatched Deputy President Mashatile from ongoing Union Buildings formalities for another visiting leader to hastily welcome PM Modi. However, Mde clarified that the Deputy President’s presence at Waterkloof was not the result of a sudden dispatch but rather a well-coordinated effort after his commitments at the Union Buildings had concluded.
As the BRICS summit continues, the South African government’s swift denial underscores the strength of diplomatic relations between the involved nations.
