UPSC Success Story: The Inspiring Journey of IAS Rukmani Riar
The UPSC Civil Services Exam stands as one of India’s most demanding assessments. Every year, countless aspirants undertake this rigorous examination with the aspiration of becoming IAS officers. However, only a handful of determined individuals manage to conquer the complexities of the UPSC exam and ascend to the status of IAS officers. This article delves into the remarkable story of IAS Rukmani Riar, who not only cracked the UPSC exam on her initial attempt but also achieved an impressive second rank.
During her school days, Rukmani Riar did not shine as a top student; in fact, she even faced failure in the 6th grade. Having pursued her schooling in Gurdaspur, she later enrolled at the Sacred Heart School in Dalhousie during the 4th grade. Rukmani’s academic journey led her to graduate in Social Science from Guru Nanak Dev University in Amritsar, and she further pursued a Master’s degree in Social Sciences from the Tata Institute in Mumbai.
After completing her Master’s program at TISS Mumbai, Rukmani embarked on internships with notable NGOs, including Ashoda in Mysore and Annapurna Mahila Mandal in Mumbai. Her experiences within the realm of non-governmental organizations gradually kindled her interest in civil service, prompting her decision to appear for the UPSC exam.
In the year 2011, Rukmani Riar achieved an exceptional feat by cracking the UPSC exam on her very first attempt, securing an impressive All India Rank (AIR) of 2. Her journey was characterized by independent study, as she chose not to avail herself of coaching assistance. Relying on her dedication, she turned to NCERT books spanning grades 6 to 12, all while maintaining a steady habit of reading newspapers and magazines.
Rukmani’s journey stands as a testament to the power of self-motivation and diligent study, demonstrating that with determination and resourcefulness, even the most challenging goals can be achieved.
